Imagine: it’s late at night, and you’re on the couch binge watching a tv show. Maybe you have something to eat, something to drink, maybe you’re actually half asleep. Regardless, have you ever wondered what it would be like if your own life was a show?
Of course, the Truman Show already explored this. But what if this was actually true? Think about when we’re watching a movie. We essentially take a bunch of energy projecting from a screen and interpret it as characters, places, tangible 3d things. Even in a hand-animated show, the animation is reliant upon creating an illusion of depth within the frame. The point is, we can never perceive the second dimension without a three-dimensional object. The object has to have one dimension so small or one side so smooth that it seems like it could be perceived as a two dimensional plane.
Why am I saying this? Well, let’s think about our reality. Mathematician’s and philosophers have thought about the idea of a fourth dimension for a very long time. Basically, you extend the 3rd dimension in another new direction. Of course, we can’t understand or imagine that. But, if you do want to think about it, go look at a tesseract. It’s essentially a representation of the 4th dimension.
My problem is, if there is a fourth dimension, then where do we exist? There exists an infinite amount of 2 dimensional planes within a 3d space and an infinite amount of 1 dimensional planes within a 2d space, so what about 3-dimensional planes within the 4th dimension? If the answer is infinite, just like the first two, then are there infinite realities?
Now, let’s take this idea back to the ground for a second. If we focus two much on that topic, we won’t get anywhere. However, let’s think about four dimensional beings for a second.
We as humans cannot interact with the second dimension. Yes, we can create representations of it, but a 3d object can never become 2d, nor can it ever interact with an actual 2d object. Matter is always 3d. Given this information, how could a 4th dimensional being interact with the 3rd dimension? I’ve seen some ideas about four dimensional beings being able to phase in and out of our plane at will, and this idea sort of makes sense. After all, as 3-dimensional beings, we walk through 2d planes every day. However, we can never actually interact with the second dimension. Everything we do is confined within 3d space. So, knowing this, is it possible that 4-dimensional people exist, but they are unable to interact our dimension?
Well, this theory may not be true. If we know that there is an infinite amount of 2d planes within 3d space, then maybe we can change a 2-dimensional plane. Everything something moves, it moves through a 2d plane, so isn’t that “interacting” within a 2d space? If there is a 2d plane inside of a wall, and all of a sudden, I break the wall, shouldn’t there be a difference within the 2d plane? The wall that was occupying space within the 2d plane is now gone, so maybe this theory is true.
Anyway, most of this is just speculation. I was even thinking that light might be 2 dimensional, but that’s just wrong. It occupies 3d space. This raises the question of whether energy is 3-dimensional or not, because it doesn’t actually occupy any space. That, I can’t tell you. But now, I’m going to stop thinking before this becomes a rabbit hole. Anyhow, we may never figure out anything about the 4th dimension, but if we do, I want to be the first person to hear about it.
